| Prefix | A unit of meaning attached to the front of a word |
| Root | The core or foundation of a words meaning |
| Combining Vowel | A vowel that is added to the end of a root that does not change the meaning of the word |
| Combining form | The root and the combining vowel together |
| Suffix | A unit of meaning attached to the end of a word |
| Affix | A unit of meaning attached to the prefix or suffix that changes the root in some kind of way |
| Recumbent | When the animal is laying down |
| Sternal Recumbency | When a dog is laying on its belly |
| Lateral Recumbency | When the animal is laying on its right or left side |
| Dorsal Recumbency | When the animal is laying on its back |
| Cranial | Towards the head |
| Caudal | Towards the tail |
| Rostral | Towards the nose |
| Dorsal | Refers to the back of the animal |
| Ventral | Refers to the belly of the animal |
| Palmar | Refers to the bottom of an animals front foot |
| Plantar | Refers to the bottom of an animals hind foot |
| Medial | Towards the midline of the body |
| Lateral | Away from the midline of the body |
| Dorsal plane | Divides the body into dorsal and ventral areas |
| Sagittal plane | Divides the body into left and right |
| Transverse plane | Divides the body into cranial and caudal |
