4.1 Classification of Marine Organisms

TermDefinition
Classification – The process of grouping organisms based on their shared characteristics.
Taxonomy – The scientific study of naming, defining, and classifying organisms.
Biodiversity – The variety of life in the world or a particular ecosystem.
Taxonomic Hierarchy – The system of ranking organisms into groups (domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).
Domain – The highest taxonomic rank in the classification system.
Kingdom – A major taxonomic category below the domain.
Phylum – A taxonomic rank below kingdom and above class.
Binomial Nomenclature – A system of naming species with two names: genus and species.
Genus – A taxonomic rank below family and above species; the first part of the binomial name.
Species – The basic unit of classification, denoting a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Eukarya – One of the three domains of life, including organisms with complex cells.
Bacteria – A domain of prokaryotic microorganisms.
Archaea – A domain of prokaryotic organisms distinct from bacteria.
Monera – The kingdom consisting of unicellular organisms like bacteria and archaea.
Protista – A kingdom of diverse, mostly unicellular organisms.
Plantae – The kingdom of multicellular, photosynthetic organisms.
Animalia – The kingdom of multicellular organisms that consume organic material.
Fungi – The kingdom of organisms that decompose organic material.
Phylogeny – The evolutionary history and relationships of an organism or group.
Homologous Structures – Structures in different species that are similar due to common ancestry.
Adaptations – Characteristics that enhance an organism's ability to survive in a particular environment.
Morphology – The study of the form and structure of organisms.
Dichotomous Key – A tool used to identify organisms based on a series of choices
