TermDefinition
inequality a mathematical statement that compares two quantities using <, >, ≤,≥, or ≠
greater than a value that is higher than another value; has an open circle when shown on a number line
greater than or equal to a value that is "at least" as big as or "no smaller than" another value; has a closed circle when shown on a number line
less than a value that is lower than another value; has an open circle when shown on a number line
less than or equal to a value that is "at most" as big as or "no more than" another value; has a closed circle when shown on a number line
independent variable an input value in an equation or expression; the variable influences change on the other variable
dependent variable an output value in an equation or expression; the variable that is influenced by the other variable
inverse operations operations that undo each other; opposite operations, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division
solution a value that makes an equation true
equation a mathematical statement showing that two expressions are equal
solution set all values of the variable that make the equation or inequality true
