| Term | Definition |

| Rational Number | A fraction (comes from the word ratio- can be converted to a decimal) or the opposite of a fraction. |
| Whole Number | The counting numbers including |
| Positive Numbers | Any real number greater than 0. It is located to the right of 0 on the number line. |
| Compare | Using >, <, ≥, ≤, =, or ≠ to indicate the relationship between two quantities. |
| Greater than > | A relationship showing that one quantity is larger than another quantity |
| Less than < | A relationship showing that one value is smaller than a second value |
| Equal to = | A symbol that means two things have the same value |
| Integers | Whole numbers and their opposites (Negative numbers). |
| Negative Numbers | The opposite of a positive number. Less than 0. Negative numbers are to the left of 0 on the number line. |
| Opposite | Numbers the same distance from zero in different directions |
| Absolute Value | The distance from 0. Always positive. Notation is l a l |
| Magnitude | Size of a number (distance from 0). |
