Geometry Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solid | A three dimensional (3D) object. |
| Face of a Solid | Any of the individual flat surfaces of a solid object. |
| Base of a solid | The face a solid object stands on. |
| Lateral face of a solid | The faces that are on the side of a solid (not the base) |
| Prism | A solid object with two identical ends and flat sides. |
| Rectangular Prism | A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles. |
| Cube | A box-shaped solid object that has six identical square faces. |
| Pyramid | The base is a polygon (flat with straight edges) and all other faces are triangles. No curves! |
| Volume | The amount of 3-dimensional space something takes up. |
| Volume of a Rectangular Prism | V = lwh (Volume = Length x Width x Height) |
| Volume of a cube | Since all edges of a cube are the same size: V=lwh can be written as V = S3 |
| Surface Area | The total area of all the surfaces of a solid. Sum of the areas of each face |
| Net of a solid | A pattern that you can cut and fold to make a model of a solid shape. |
