Geometry Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Solid A three dimensional (3D) object.
Face of a Solid Any of the individual flat surfaces of a solid object.
Base of a solid The face a solid object stands on.
Lateral face of a solid The faces that are on the side of a solid (not the base)
Prism A solid object with two identical ends and flat sides.
Rectangular Prism A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles.
Cube A box-shaped solid object that has six identical square faces.
Pyramid The base is a polygon (flat with straight edges) and all other faces are triangles. No curves!
Volume The amount of 3-dimensional space something takes up.
Volume of a Rectangular Prism V = lwh (Volume = Length x Width x Height)
Volume of a cube Since all edges of a cube are the same size: V=lwh can be written as V = S3
Surface Area The total area of all the surfaces of a solid. Sum of the areas of each face
Net of a solid A pattern that you can cut and fold to make a model of a solid shape.
