Electrons Vocab: 1
Electrons Unit: Concept 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Electrons | Negative (-) subatomic particles that behave like waves |
| Electromagnetic radiation | A form of energy that exhibits wavelength behavior as it travels through space. Some examples include: radio waves, microwaves, and infrared waves. |
| Wavelength | A unit of distance for measuring waves (sometimes measured in 'mn') |
| Frequency | The number of waves that pass a given point in a certain time (often measured in Hz = waves/second) |
| Emission spectrum | The spectrum of light released from excited atoms of an element |
| Heisenberg uncertainty principle | It is impossible to determine the position and velocity of an electron or other particle simultaneously |
| Valence electrons | Electrons in the outermost energy level |
| Octet rule | The tendency of atoms to prefer 8 valence e- |
| Ions | When an atom gains or loses e- to become stable (a charged atom) |
| Lewis structures | A convenient and simple way to represent an element and its valence e- |
