Qin and Han Dynasty

| Qin Dynasty | (221-207 BCE) The first centralized dynasty of China that used Legalism as its base of belief. |
| Shi Huangdi | founder of the Qin dynasty and China's first emperor built the Great Wall, standardized weights, measures, and the language |
| Legalism | Chinese philosophy developed by Hanfeizi; taught that humans are naturally evil and therefore need to be ruled by harsh laws |
| Great Wall of China | world's longest man made structure built to keep invaders from the north out of China, started by the Qin Dynasty, expanded by the Han Dynasty |
| interchangeable parts | Identical pieces that could be assembled quickly by unskilled workers |
| Terracotta Army | collection of eight thousand life-sized sculptures made from pottery in the tomb of Shi Huangdi |
| Han Dynasty | (202 BCE-220 CE) This dynasty continued the centralization of the Qin Dynasty, but focused on Confucianism and education instead of Legalim. |

| Wudi | Han emperor (r. 141-86 B.C.E.) who began the Chinese civil service system by establishing an academy to train imperial bureaucrats. |
| Civil Service Exam | In Imperial China starting in the Han dynasty, it was an exam based on Confucian teachings that was used to select people for various government service jobs in the nationwide administrative bureaucracy. |
| Silk Road | An ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea extending some 6,440 km (4,000 mi) and linking China with the Roman Empire. Marco Polo followed the route on his journey to Cathay. |
