| juxtaposition | Placement of two things closely together to emphasize comparisons or contrasts |
| antithesis | the direct opposite, a sharp contrast |
| compound sentence | a sentence with two or more independent clauses, often joined by one or more conjunctions |
| complex sentence | A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause |
| periodic sentence | sentence whose main clause is withheld until the end |
| cumulative sentence | sentence that completes the main idea at the beginning of the sentence and then builds and adds on |
| imperative sentence | A sentence that requests or commands. |
| metaphors | a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. |
| simile | A comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
| imagery | Description that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) |
| oxymoron | A figure of speech that combines opposite or contradictory terms in a brief phrase |
| connotation | an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. |
| diction | A writer's or speaker's choice of words |
| irony situational | a situation or event that is the opposite of what is or might be expected |
| irony verbal | the use of words to express the opposite of their literal meaning |
| mood | How the reader feels about the text while reading. |
| syntax | The arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language. |
| tone | Attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character |
| misplaced modifier | A modifier that is not placed near the word it modifies |
| dangling modifier | a word or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence |
| Personification | A figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes |
| passive voice | the ball was thrown by the quarterback |
| active voice | the quarterback threw the ball |
| linking verbs | Verbs that don't show action. They link the subject to words or groups of words that identify or describe the subject. Examples: grew (large), tasted (delicious) |
