Mitosis

TermDefinition
DNA The genes that are given to the offspring. (Deoxyribose Nucleic acid.)
Cell Division The process by which a mother cell divides its nuclear and cytoplasmic components into two daughter cells.
Chromosomes The strands of DNA
Cell Cycle A repeating series of events that includes growth, DNA synthesis and cell division.
Mitosis A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells
Interphase The phase where the cell spends most of its life.
Prophase The first phase of mitosis.
Centrioles An organelle that helps with dividing cells.
Spindle The structure the divides genetic material in the cell.
Metaphase The second phase in which chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell.
Anaphase third phase of mitosis in which spindle fibers shorten and pull sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase final phase of mitosis during which chromosomes uncoil to form chromatin, the spindle breaks down, and new nuclear membranes form.
Meiosis A type of cell division that decides the number of chromosomes in half.
