Structured Variation when languages differ in syntax, morphology, phonology, and lexicon
Social Stratification socioeconomic status influencing access to linguistic resources and shaping communication patterns
Sociolinguistics the study of the sociological aspects of language
Dialect is a form of a language spoken by a smaller group
Regional Variety a variety of a language spoken in a particular region, characterized by phonological, syntactic, & lexical properties
Merger is a sound change where 2 or more contrastive sounds are replaced by a single sound
Split where a once identical phoneme diverges in different instances
Double Modal a grammatical construction where 2 modal verbs used consecutively within a single sentence Example: "might could" "could should"
Language Variety specific form of a language, encompassing different dialects, accents, registers, & sociolects
Rhoticity, Non-rhoticity speakers that pronounce rhotic consonant -r in words like car, farm, & first Example: New York, England, New Jersey
Linguistic Divergence differentiation that is driven by language contact, rather than the absence of contact
Negative Concord a natural language phenomenon where multiple negative expressions are used, but a single negation is interpreted
Zero-Copula where a subject is joined to the predicated without standing out Example: replacing "be" with "are"
African American Vernacular English dialect of English with its own grammar, pronunciation, & vocabulary
