| Social Stratification | socioeconomic status influencing access to linguistic resources and shaping communication patterns |
| Sociolinguistics | the study of the sociological aspects of language |
| Dialect | is a form of a language spoken by a smaller group |
| Regional Variety | a variety of a language spoken in a particular region, characterized by phonological, syntactic, & lexical properties |
| Merger | is a sound change where 2 or more contrastive sounds are replaced by a single sound |
| Split | where a once identical phoneme diverges in different instances |
| Double Modal | a grammatical construction where 2 modal verbs used consecutively within a single sentence Example: "might could" "could should" |
| Language Variety | specific form of a language, encompassing different dialects, accents, registers, & sociolects |
| Rhoticity, Non-rhoticity | speakers that pronounce rhotic consonant -r in words like car, farm, & first Example: New York, England, New Jersey |
| Linguistic Divergence | differentiation that is driven by language contact, rather than the absence of contact |
| Negative Concord | a natural language phenomenon where multiple negative expressions are used, but a single negation is interpreted |
| Zero-Copula | where a subject is joined to the predicated without standing out Example: replacing "be" with "are" |
| African American Vernacular English | dialect of English with its own grammar, pronunciation, & vocabulary |
