| Term | Definition |

| Clause | A group of words containing a subject and predicate. |
| Phrase | A group of words that go together but don't have a subject and predicate. |
| Predicate | The main action in a sentence. |
| Modifier | Something that describes. |
| Sentence | A complete thought with a subject and predicate. |
| Subordinating Conjunction | A conjunction that joins a main clause and a clause which does not form a complete sentence by itself. |
| Dependent Clause | A clause that doesn't form a simple sentence by itself and that is connected to the main clause of a sentence: subordinating conjunction. |
| Independent Clause | A clause that could be used by itself as a simple sentence but that is a form of a larger sentence. |
| Relative Clause | A clause that will describe/limit something. |
| Complex Sentence | C.S. = Dep. Clause +, Ind. Clause or C.S. = Ind. Clause + Dep. Clause. |
| Thesis | A sentence at the beginning of the essay that has the main argument. |
| Conclusion | A final summation. |
| Introduction | Something that makes preliminary explanatories or laudatory remarks about. |
| Topic Sentence | A sentence that states the main thought of a paragraph |
| Transition | A change or shift from one state, subject, place, etc. to another. |
| Dialogue | When two or more characters talk to each other. Main way of communication in a play. |
| Monologue | A dramatic sketch preformed by one actor. |
| Stage Direction | A description/Direction for a character to go to that is provided in the script. |
| Aside | An actors speech heard by the audience but not by other characters. |
| Drama | A theatrical performance that has characters and shows conflict and emotion through action. AKA. Play, show, etc. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of sounds in two or more neighboring words. |
| Paradox | A statement that might seem false or impossible but is true. |
| Oxymoron | A combo of contradictory words. |
| Concrete | Naming a real thing. |
| Figurative | Saying something but not meaning it literally. |
