| Term | Definition |

| Stars | Objects in space that produces its own energy including heat and light |
| Inner planets | Any of the four planets that are located between the Sun and the asteroid belt |
| Outer planets | Any of the planets that orbit the Sun and are located outside the asteroid belt |
| Sun | The star that Earth and other planets in our solar system revolve around |
| Moon | A natural object that orbits a planet |
| Asteroids | One of many small, rocky objects between Mars and Jupiter |
| Comets | A mixture of ice, frozen gasses, rock, and dust left over from the formation of the Solar System |
| Rotation | A complete spin on its axis |
| Revolution (orbit) | One complete trip of an object around another object |
| Axis | An imaginary line that a planet rotates on |
| Apparent Motion | The way objects seem to move |
| Constellation | Patterns seen in a group of stars |
| Seasons | Different times during the year where the weather is different Examples: fall, spring, summer, winter |
| Universe | Everything that exists, all matter and energy throughout space and time |
| Solar System | The Sun and everything that orbits around it |
| Galaxy | A collection of a billion stars |
| Dwarf Planet | Object that orbits a star, but does not have a clear orbital path and is smaller than a planet |
| Meteoroid | Formed when asteroids collide into each other- called a meteorite when it enters Earth’s atmosphere (shooting star) |
| Gravity | A force that exists between any two objects that have mass |
| Inertia | The tendency of an object at rest to stay at rest or an object in motion to stay in motion |
