Animal Farm Vocab.

A list of key words and definitions from Animal Farm by George Orwell

TermDefinition
Inscribe Verb - Carve, cut, or etch into a material or surface. "He used a pocket knife to inscribe his name on the wooden bench."
Ration Noun - A fixed portion that is allotted. The share of something that everyone gets. "We each got a ration of two pieces of pizza."
Harvest Noun/Verb - The gathering of a ripened crop. "It was time for the harvest. If the crops weren't picked, they'd go bad in the field."
Ensconce Verb - To fix firmly in place. "He used nine-inch-nails to ensconce the mailbox firmly on its post after it got knocked off by a car."
Pasture Noun - A field covered in grass where livestock are brought to graze. "Once the sheep ate all the grass, the shepherd had to bring them to a different pasture."
Knoll Noun - A small, natural mound. "The hunter saw the deer when it climbed up on a knoll to look around."
Orchard Noun - An area where fruit trees are planted so their fruit can be harvested. "There was an orchard behind the farmer's house where he grew apples to feed his family and horses."
Straw Noun - Plant fiber from trees used for making baskets and hats and as animal feed. "She wore a straw hat to protect her from the sun."
Announce Verb - Make known. "The teacher announced that the vocabulary words would be available for study in a Study Stack."
Labor Noun - Productive work. Especially hard physical work done for wages. "Because all of the product of our labor is stolen by human beings for their own use."
Quarry Noun - Animal hunted or caught for food. "My cat is a hunter and a mouse is her quarry."
Shed Noun - A small outer building used for storage. "They kept all of their dog food in plastic bins in a shed outside the back door."
Complicated Adjective - The opposite of simple. "He came up with a complicated plan that involved all sorts of twists and turns that nobody else but him could understand.
Boar Noun - An uncastrated male hog. "Word went round that Major, the prize middle white boar, had a strange dream the night before."
Huddle Noun - A disorganized and densely packed crowd. "The chickens were gathered around in a huddle waiting for the farmer's wife to throw down some corn."
Chaff Noun - Material consisting of seed coverings and pieces of stem. It is what is thrown away after the wheat germs are separated to be ground into flour. "The farmer gathers the wheat and throws away the chaff."
Gambol Verb - Play or run boisterously. "The dog gamboled in the yard after being locked inside all day."
Whinny Noun/Verb - The characteristic sound made by a horse. "The horse stood up on its hind legs and whinnied before running away at a full gallop."
Windfall Noun - A sudden happening that brings good fortune. "Winning $1000 on a scratch-off ticket was enough of a windfall for Karen to buy some new clothes for her kids."
Assemble Verb - To come together in a group. "The animals had assembled in the big barn."
Superannuated Adjective - Extremely old. "There was talk that the field would be turned into grazing for the superannuated animals on the farm."
Cryptic Adjective - Having a secret or hidden meaning. "The cryptic meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphics was only made clear once the Rosetta Stone was discovered and made their translation possible."
Maxim Noun - A saying that is widely regarded as true. "Snowball thought their rules could be reduced to a single maxim: 'Four legs good; two legs bad.'"
