| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| element | is a substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances by chemical means |
| triad | a group of 3 elements with similar chemical properties in which the atomic weight of the middle element is the average of the other two, e.g: CL, BR, I |
| newlands octaves | arrangements of elements in which the first and eighth element, counting from a particular element, have similar properties |
| mendeleev's periodic law | when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic weigth the properties of elements recure periodically, i.e: repeated at regular intervals, in other elements |
| atomic number | (of an atom) is the number of protons in the nucleus of that atom |
| modern periodic table | arrangement of elements in order of increasing atomic number |
| modern periodic law | elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, properties of elements recur periodically, i.e: properties displayed repeated at regular intervals in other elements |
| mass number | is the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of that atom |
| isotopes | atoms of the same elements which have different mass numbers due to different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus but the same atomic number |
| principle of mass spectrometry | is that charged particles moving in the magnetic field are deflected to different extents according to their masses & thus separated according to their masses |
| electronic configuration | shows the arrangement of electrons in an atom of an element |
