Fractions

QuestionAnswer
Equivalent fraction Fractions that have the same value
Fractions A number that expresses parts of a whole or a group
Quarter (fourth) One of four equal parts.
Greatest common factor (GCF) The greatest factor that divides exactly into two or more numbers.
Numerator The top number in a fraction.
Denominator The bottom number in a fraction.
Simplest form When the numerator and denominator cannot be any smaller. Also known as "lowest terms".
Improper fraction A fraction where the numerator is greater than, or equal to, the denominator. Ex: 7/5
Mixed number A whole number and a fraction. Ex: 1 and 2/5
Multiples The product of a whole number multiplied by any other whole number.
Factors Numbers you can multiply together to get another number.
Benchmark fractions Fractions that are commonly used as a reference for other fractions. Like 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, etc.
Common denominator A number that is a common multiple of all the denominators of a set of fractions. Ex: 12 is a common denominator of 2/3 and 3/4.
Like denominators Different fractions that have the same denominators (same total number of pieces). Ex: 3/8, 4/8, 7/8, etc.
Unlike denominators Fractions that have different denominators (different total number of pieces). Ex: 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, etc.
Fraction bar The line that separates the numerator and the denominator
Factor pair A set of two numbers that when multiplied together give you a specific number.
Simplify When you divide the numerator and denominator by the greatest common factor (GCF).
Area The amount of space inside a flat (2-dimensional) object such as a rectangle, floor, wall, window, etc. Area = Length x Width and is measured in square units (sq. in, sq. cm, etc).
Unit fraction A fraction that has 1 as its numerator. Ex: 1/2, 1/17, 1/100, etc.
Length The measurement of how far something is from end to end.
Width The measurement of distance from side to side.
Scaling The ratio of the length in a drawing, or model, to the length of the real object.
