Energy & Changes
Unit 4: Energy & Chemical Changes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| chemical change | A change in matter where the original substances turn into new substances with different properties. Burning, rusting, cooking. |
| combustion | A chemical reaction between substances, usually including oxygen accompanied by giving off heat. |
| conduction | Movement of heat through matter. The transfer of heat by touching two things together (Direct contact). |
| convection | Transfer of heat by the movement of fluids (liquids or gases). Hot fluid rises, while cold fluid sinks. |
| endothermic | Chemical changes that absorb energy and become cooler. More energy is required to break the bond. |
| exothermic | A chemical change that may produce heat energy, (heat exits). |
| physical change | Changes in matter where the chemical composition is not changed. Cutting, ripping, mixing. |
| precipitate | A solid that forms and sinks to the bottom of a liquid after a chemical reaction. |
| radiation | Transfer of heat or energy transmitted in waves. Sunlight, microwave, bonfire. |
| specific heat | The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius |
| thermal energy | Energy generated by a source and measured by heat. |
