Describe the idea of popular sovereignty The doctrine that stated that the sovereign people of a territory, under the general principles of the Constitution, should themselves determine the status of slavery
Summarize who made the most money from the Gold Rush Those who mined the miners. Hotel owners and store owners. They charged lots of money for laundry and other personal services.
Identify the terms: stations, passengers, and conductors Stations were antislavery homes. Passengers were runaway slaves. Conductors were usually white and black abolitionists.
What did Senator William Seward not realize about compromise? Compromise had brought the Union together and that when the sections could no longer compromise, they would have to part company.
Describe what was required of “freedom loving northerners”. If they had aided a slave to escape they were liable to heavy fines and jail sentences. They sometimes were ordered to join the slave catchers.
Under Douglas’s plan, what would Kansas and Nebraska enter the Union as? They were to be settled by popular sovereignty. Kansas would presumably become a slave state and Nebraska would presumably become a free state.
What did Douglas’s plan contradict that had been in place for decades? The Missouri Compromise of 1820
What did Uncle Tom’s Cabin do to draw attention to slavery? It drew attention to the wickedness of slavery by laying bare to its terrible inhumanity. It relied on powerful imagery and touching pathos. The book helped start the Civil War and win the war.
Describe the attitude the south had toward Harriet Beecher Stowe The South condemned that "vile wretch in petticoats" and thought her indictment was unfair.
What were most of the northern settlers in Kansas like? Ordinary western-moving pioneers in search of richer lands beyond the sunset.
Summarize the events at Osawatomie Creek. John Brown and his band of followers hacked to death 5 men.
Identify what the altercation between Charles Sumner and Preston Brooks was about. Brooks beat Sumner with a cane in court because Sumner insulted South Carolina in court over popular sovereignty.
How did Lincoln marrying above himself help him politically? It helped school him in patience and forbearance.
In the Lincoln-Douglas debates, what did Lincoln rely upon to try and win the support of people? Lincoln relied on logic rather than on table thumping.
Although losing the Senate election, what did Lincoln begin to emerge as? A potential Republican nominee for president.
Describe what happened at Harpers Ferry. John Brown seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, killed seven innocent people and injured ten more. The slaves that John Brown wanted to have join him failed to rise and he was captured.
Upon being convicted of murder and treason, what was John Brown clever enough to see? He was worth more to the abolitionist cause as a martyr hanging dead from a rope rather than any other way.
How did the Southern secessionists view of Lincoln and Lincoln’s view towards slavery compare? The Southern secessionists viewed Lincoln as an abolitionist and that he would split the Union. However, Lincoln, though he hated slavery, was no outright abolitionist.
Determine why it could be stated that Lincoln was a “minority” president. 60 percent of voters preferred another president.
Identify the first state to secede from the country. South Carolina
What happened in February 1861? The seven seceded states created a government known as the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as the President.
Identify reasons secession was supported in the southern states. They felt sure that their departure would be unopposed despite Yankee yawp to the contrary.
