| Term | Definition |

| alliteration | where same sounds or letters are placed at the beginning of words that are near each other |
| rhythm | the pace or beat of a poem (can vary from line to line) |
| metaphor | a figure of speech which describes something by saying it is something else |
| repetition | purposeful re-use of words and phrases |
| enjambment | the continuation of a sentence or clause over a line break |
| imagery | the name given to the elements of a poem that creates pictures and images in your head |
| onomatopoeia | the use of words to imitate or suggest the sounds that they describe e.g. wooof or boooom |
| personification | giving human ideas or actions to non human objects |
| rhyme scheme | the way the poem's rhymes are arranged e.g. aabb or abab |
| simile | a comparison that states two things are like each other. always has like or as. |
