Study Stack Chapter 1: Organization of the Body

TERMS DESCRIPTIONS
anatomy study of the structure
physiology study of nature or function
cellular level The smallest "living" part of the body
tissue level Level that is made up of a group of cells working together to perform a task
organ level level made up of groups of tissues working together to perform a task
chemical level level that includes atoms and molecules
System level Level that is the most complex unit within the organism
organism A word used to denote a living thing
posterior towards the back
anterior towards the front
lateral towards the side
medial towards the middle
distal away from the front
proximal closer to the point of attachment
pathology study of the disease
pharmacology study of drugs
stressor anything that can disrupt homeostasis
sensor part of the feedback loop system that detects a change
negative feedback loop prevents deviation from normal
positive feedback loop amplifies changes in the body
superior above
inferior below
superficial closer to the surface
dorsal back
ventral belly
diaphragm muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities
sagittal plane divides the body into right and left
frontal plane divides the body into interior and posterior portions another term is coronal plane
transverse plane divides the body into superior and inferior , is a horizontal or crosswise plane that divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower portions
mediastinum is a subdivision of the abdominal cavity
mucous membrane A membrane that lines a body surface that opens to the exterior of the body .
supine position lying horizontally with the face and torso facing up .
prone facing downward
axial region head , neck, torso
anatomical position Is the reference position in which the body is in an erect or standing posture with the arms at the sides and palms turned forward. The head points forward, as do the feet, which are slightly apart
midsagittal plane divides the body into two equal halves
