What is the benefit of palming the shears? Allows you to hold comb and shears at once
What benefits using a razor for a haircut? Gives a softer appearance than a shears
What is tension and how are minimum and maximum tension achieved? Tension is the pressure applied when combing and holding a subsection of hair. Minimum tension is combing without pulling. Maximum tension is coming while slightly pulling the hair.
How is a trimmer used? Used to clean the neckline and around the ears
Why should you be cautious when cutting short layers in thin hair? Layers remove weight making the hair appear thinner
What does graduation do? It’s a gradual progression of lengthened buildup of weight.
Which technique is best for short taper cuts? Shears over comb
Which hair type is not recommended for razor cuts? Curly hair
How do you locate bang area? Falls no wider than the outer corners of the eye
What’s slide cutting? Method of sliding the scissors down the hair as opposed to open and closing the scissors
When should you avoid cutting bangs? When strong cowlicks are present or low hairlines
What is another name for effilating? Notching and slithering
What is carving? its running the scissors over the hair while slightly opening and closing
Which texturizing cutting technique works well on curly hair? Free hand
Describe point cutting? Done on the hair ends to soften a blunt edge using scissor tips
What's the difference between razor over comb and comb rotation? Over comb softens weight lines and taper the nape area while rotation is circular motion that gives direction to the hair cut
What does a clipper lever do? A clipper lever adjusts the distance between the fixed comb guard and the moving blade.
What is the large guard vs. the small guard going to do as far as cutting the hair? A large guard is going to keep the most hair on the head and a small guard is going to cut the hair close to the head.
When you open the lever all the way the 1 1/2 guard becomes what? They become each other, so 1 ½ becomes 2” cut. Its giving and taking a ½”
When the lever is closed the 2 guard becomes what? If it has the 2” guard on it but the level is closed it’s the same as the 1 ½”. Its giving and taking a ½”
Why is knowing the information in the 2 previous questions important? It’s making the transitions smoother and cleaner without having to switch guards back and forth. It doesn’t create lines.
Describe how the lever was used to help the barber not leave any lines in the haircut? It helps him transition cleanly without putting a guard on and off. He can go up the hair cut gradually adding length without stopping, it’s just a flick of the lever.
What does the term crispy refer to? Sharp edges
What is a T-outliner, and what is different about it from a regular outliner? a T-outliner is an outliner that has 2 curved edges that stick out like a T which enables easy handling, a regular trimmer does not its flat on the sides.
Why is a T-outliner an important tool to have? It helps guide you like your using a pencil to draw
How should you hold a trimmer? Nice and loose, three fingers in the front and the thumb in the back and your wrist loose like drawing with a pencil. Not stiff and uncomfortable.
How do you outline a forehead or cheek? Pointer finger bent and placed on the forehead/cheek which helps with leverage and stability of your trimmer so you're not floating in the air unstable and shaky. Same concept as a protractor, was the word he was searching for.
How do you use a trimmer to trim a mustache and edge a beard? Use the back of your hand and place on the forehead/cheek for stability when working upside down as well.
Does it make a difference if you are right or left handed when using a trimmer? To an extent because when working on the non dominant side you don’t have as much leverage to use the finger/back hand on the face so you’ll have to freestyle work or possibly use the tip of the pointer placed on the cheek.
What is created when 2 line surfaces intersect at a given point? diagonal
The lines found in a haircut are? Horizontal, vertical and diagonal
The 2 types of Diagonal lines are? Diagonal forward and back
what are the two basic lines in haircutting and what do they do? curved, creates a softer edge and straight, creates a hard edge.
what is the difference of elevation and graduation? elevation is the degree at which a section of hair is held when cutting and graduation is the elevation that occurs when a section is lifted above 0 degrees
how can you find the apex? found by placing a comb flat on the head, the comb will rest on that highest point
how can you find the parietal ridge? found by placing a comb flat on the side of the head, its found where the head starts to curve away from the comb.
how do you find the occipital bone? simply feel the back of the skull or place a comb flat against the nape and find where the comb leaves the head.
where can you find the four corners? placing two combs flat against the side and back, and then locating the back corner at the point where the two combs meet.
what are forged shears? made by process of working metal to a finished shape by hammering or pressing
what are cast shears? made by a process whereby molten steel is poured into a mold
what is a cutting line? the angle at which the fingers are held when cutting the line that creates the end shape.
what is a stationary guideline? guideline that DOES NOT MOVE
what is a traveling guideline? also known as moveable guideline, MOVES as haircut progresses
what are the 4 most important characteristics in a hair analysis? growth patters texture density elasticity
what is overdirection? combing a section away from it natural falling position, toward a guideline; used to create increasing length in the interior or perimeter. build weight
what is the best cutting edge? convex edge, gives smoothest cut and is the sharpest edge.
what is an opposing grip? force the thumb underneath the ring finger and can create stress and pressure on the nerves and tendons of the hand
what is an offset grip? Moves the thumb forward, so it is resting below the ring and middle finger
what is an crane grip? Thumb grip under the index finger which is how your hand is when relaxed
what are the different types of texturizing? pointcutting, notching, free-hand notching, effilating, slicing, and carving
