Septic System

Vocab 1

TermDefinition
Effluent The partially treated liquid wastewater that flows from the septic tank to the drain field.
Drain Field Drains effluent water evening into the ground to be cleaned by the soil
Baffles Baffles are flow-restricting devices in septic tanks and distribution boxes. They prevent the outflow of sludge and scum from the septic tank into the drain field. They also serve to reduce the velocity of effluent coming from the septic tank.
Distribution Box/D Box The distribution box, also known as a D-box, distributes liquid effluent that flows from the septic tank to the drain field.
FOG Fats, oil, and grease that is a component of wastewater that forms a floating layer of scum in the septic tank.
Retention Time Retention time is a measure of the amount of time in hours or days that effluent remains in the septic tank before flowing out to the absorption system.
Scum Scum is less dense than water so lighter solids, greases, soaps, and oils float to the surface of the liquid effluent and form a scum layer.
Septic Tank Riser A septic tank riser extends from the septic tank opening to the ground’s surface. This eliminates the need to dig through the ground to access the septic tank’s lid for inspections or repairs.
Sludge Heavier solids settle to the bottom of the septic tank and form a sludge layer. The sludge and scum layer are removed from the septic tank by periodic pumping services.
Sewage The combination of human and household waste with water that is discharged into the plumbing drain system.
Septic Tank Septic tanks are closed containers that retain household sewage to begin the decomposition process through bacterial action.
Percolation Percolation is the ability of the soil in a drain field to allow water to pass through.
Aerobic Aerobic bacteria are bacteria that only exist in the presence of oxygen. They live in the soil around the drain field and are responsible for removing pathogens and other biological materials coming from the septic tank.
#2 Stone Washed stone that is clean and measures between 2 inches and 1.25 inches.
4 inch Drain Pipe 4 inch pipe that is used for the leach field in a septic system.
4 inch Schedule 40 PVC Hard strong pipe used between the house and septic tank and generally between tank and distribution box.
Anaerobic The term also applies to bacteria that live without oxygen and anaerobic digestion, a process used to break down organic waste into biogas.
