Feudalism Social & political system where land = power; many small lords rather than centralized government
Peasants People who are low on the feudal social class hierarchy; typically farmers
Noble Someone who is born into a high class of birth
Dynastic cycle The continuous rising and falling of powerful families in China
Mandate of Heaven The idea that power to rule comes from the Gods based on how righteous a ruler is
Shang Dynasty The first dynasty of China
Oracle Bones Usually, animal shells which were used to divine answers and show early Chinese script
Zhou Dynasty Longest lasting Chinese dynasty that created the idea of the Mandate of Heaven to legitimize their rule
Animism Belief system where the natural world and animals hold religious spirits
Ethnocentrism The idea that your culture or ethnicity is better than others.
Great Wall of China A man-made barrier of Northern China designed to keep out invaders.
Genghis Khan Leader of the Mongols, conquered much of Asia through warfare on horseback. Protected the silk roads and influenced trade.
Kublai Khan descendant of Genghis. Ruled in China through the Yuan Dynasty.
Civil Service Exams Tests based on Confucian values that determine readiness for government jobs and service.
Terracotta Warriors Clay soldiers buried to protect Shi Huangdi in the afterlife. Everyone is uniquely made, 7,000 soldiers buried.
Mongols Nomadic Asian peoples who, under Genghis Khan, created the largest land-based empire in history.
Philosophy A belief system that answers fundamental questions about human existence.
Confucius Philosopher and teacher whose ideas have influenced Chinese morals & civil service exams. Based on the 5 relationships and filial piety.
Confucianism Ideas of Confucius that stress moral values and behaviors. Major philosophy of China.
Shi Huangdi Started Qin Dynasty as first emperor of all of China. Ended the warring states period using rule of Legalism.
Zheng He Great sailor and explorer from China who led the world's largest fleet.
Daoism Chinese philosophy stressing natural order and harmony with nature. Dao is "The Way" which all people should follow.
Qin Dynasty Shi Huangdi's rule. Used Legalism to promote order and stability after warring states period.
