| Term | Definition |

| Peninsula | a piece of land that is almost entirely surrounded by water but is connected to the mainland on one side. |
| Uplands | land areas lying above the elevation where flooding generally occurs. |
| Polder | a low-lying tract of land that forms an artificial hydro logical entity, enclosed by embankments known as dikes. |
| Bay | a broad inlet of the sea where the land curves inward |
| Fjord | a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, as in Norway and Iceland, typically formed by submergence of a glaciated valley. |
| Canal | a channel of water artificially made for boats to travel through or to carry water from one area to another |
| Waterway | a canal, river, or narrow channel of sea which ships or boats can sail along |
| Ecosystem | a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in a particular area |
| Marine Reserve | a section of the ocean where a government has placed limits on human activity |
| Democracy | a way of governing which depends on the will of the people. |
| City-State | an independent city — and sometimes its surrounding land — which has its own government, completely separate from nearby countries. |
