Europe

TermDefinition
Peninsula a piece of land that is almost entirely surrounded by water but is connected to the mainland on one side.
Uplands land areas lying above the elevation where flooding generally occurs.
Polder a low-lying tract of land that forms an artificial hydro logical entity, enclosed by embankments known as dikes.
Bay a broad inlet of the sea where the land curves inward
Fjord a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, as in Norway and Iceland, typically formed by submergence of a glaciated valley.
Canal a channel of water artificially made for boats to travel through or to carry water from one area to another
Waterway a canal, river, or narrow channel of sea which ships or boats can sail along
Ecosystem a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in a particular area
Marine Reserve a section of the ocean where a government has placed limits on human activity
Democracy a way of governing which depends on the will of the people.
City-State an independent city — and sometimes its surrounding land — which has its own government, completely separate from nearby countries.
