| Analogy | Def: A comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification. Ex: “Life is like a box of chocolates — you never now what you’re gonna get.” |
| Antithesis | Def: “Two contrasting ideas that are intentionally juxtaposed.” Ex: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” - Neil Armstrong |
| Aphorism | Def: A TERSE statement which expresses a general truth. Ex: “Haste makes waste.” “Well done is better than well said.” |
| Apostrophe | Def: Directly addressing to an absent or imaginary person. Ex: The “Twinkle-twinkle little star” English lullaby. OR “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman, and elegy for Abraham Lincoln. |
| Conceit | Def: A fanciful expression, usually in the form of an extended metaphor. Ex: “Life is a bowl of cherries.” - meaning it is like nature, can be sweet, but does not last forever. |
| Expletive | Def: A WORD or PHRASE that adds emotion or emphasis, but does NOT add to the meaning. Ex: “Of course.” “In fact,” “Goddamned” being repeated 3x in Mark Twain’s letter. |
| Onomatopoeia | Def: A word that actually looks like the sound it makes, and we can almost hear those sounds as we read. Ex: “Kaboom,” “Hiss,” “Buzz,” “Pow,” etc. |
| Parallelism | Def: Grammatical framing of words, phrases, and sentences to GIVE structural similarity. Meaning “beside one another” in Greek roots. Ex: “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” |
| Parody | Def: Imitation of a work (artist, genre, content, etc.) with comedic intentions. Ex: “Call me maybe” Parody with Rolanda and Richard made by Wassabi Productions. |
| Sarcasm | Def: “To tear flesh,” - Greek Meaning. Bitter language that is MEANT to hurt or ridicule someone or something. Ex: “Nice outfit Kira!” (It’s so ugly..) |
| Satire | Def: The art of making someone or something look ridiculous, raising laughter in order to embarrass, humble, or discredit its targets. Ex: Shows like South Park, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. |
| Wit | Def: An intellectual statement that surprises and delights. Also suggesting the speaker’s verbal power in creating perceptive remarks. Ex: “Politicians and diapers must be changed often. For the same reason.” - Mark Twain |
