| Term | Definition |

| Fault | A fracture or zone fractures between two rocks |
| Fold | A geologic structure that is formed by layers of beds of rock being bent or folded |
| Tectonic plates | Gigantic pieces of Earth's crust and the uppermost mantle |
| Geologic time scale | A system of chronological measurements that relates to stratigraphy to time |
| Geology | The study of Earth, it's history and the process that act on it |
| Fossil | The geologically altered remains of a once living organism and/or its behavior |
| Erosion | The process by which water, gravity, wind and ice remove and transport sediment from one place to another |
| Deposition | The process of which gravity, water, wind and ice deposit weathered and relocated sediment |
| Continental drift | The theory that continents were once connected but have drifted apart |
| Relative dating | Using the locations of the layers relative to one another to date rocks, strata and fossils |
| Rock strata | Beds or layers of sedimentary rock having approximately the same composition throughout |
| Sediment | Earth material that is broken down by process of weathering can be eroded |
| Stratigraphy | The study of rock layers |
| Superposition | As layers accumulate over time, the rock at the bottom of older than the rock toward the top |
| Weathering | Exposing rock to air water and ice to break it down chemically and mechanically |
