| Low Road Theory of Emotions | Emotions that are processed in the limbic areas of the brain |
| High Road Theory of Emotions | Emotions that are processed in the cerebral cortex of the brain |

| Catharsis Effect | A powerful emotional release that, when successful, is accompanied by cognitive insight and positive change. |
| Classical Conditioning | Physiological learning system that is based on associations |
| Operant Conditioning | Reward and punishment based learning system |
