| foreshadowing | where authors provide hints, clues, or warnings about future plot developments |
| tone | the author's or narrator's attitude toward the subject, characters, or audience |
| mood | the overall feeling or emotion a story evokes in the reader, created through setting, descriptions, tone, and word choice |
| imagery | uses vivid, descriptive language to appeal to the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch |
| symbolism | where physical objects, colors, or locations are used to represent abstract ideas, themes, or deeper meanings beyond their literal sense |
| theme | the underlying message, central idea, or universal truth explored in a story |
| irony | when there's a contrast between what's said/expected and what actually happens, creating a surprising or opposite result |
