Extrusive rock Igneous rock formed from lava that erupted onto Earth’s surface
Intrusive rock Igneous rock that formed when magma hardens beneath the surface of Earth
Sediment Small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things
deposition The process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind carrying it
weathering The chemical and physical processes that break down rock and other substances.
compaction The process that presses sediments together
cementation The process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together.
Clastic rock Sedimentary rock that forms when rock fragments are squeezed together under high pressure.
erosion The process by which running water, wind, or ie carry away bits of broken-up rock.
Organic rock Sedimentary rock that forms from remains of organisms deposited in thick layers.
Chemical rock Sedimentary rock that forms when minerals crystallize from a solution.
foliated Rocks that have their grains arranged in either parallel layers or bands.
Rock cycle A series of processes that occur on Earth’s surface and in the crust and mantle that slowly change rocks from one kind to another.
