Chapter 33 Delivering Dental Care

TermDefinition
What is a fulcrum? Finger rest is used when one holds an instrument or handpiece for a specified time.
Direct supervision The dentist is watching over you well you perform the task.
Indirect supervision You are doing the task but not being watched over, but the dentist is in the office.
When working with a right handed dentist, the assistant transfers instrument using the left hand
List the 5 Classification of Motion and briefly describe each: Class I: Movement of fingers only Class II: Movement of fingers and wrist Class III: Movement of fingers, wrist, and elbow Class IV: Use of the entire arm and shoulder Class V: Use of the entire upper torso
The operator’s zone: where the main person who is working on the patient is seated.
Transfer zone: Where instruments are being exchanged.
Assistant’s zone: Where the dental assistant is at.

List the objectives of efficient instrument transfer: Understanding the order to pass instruments anticipate when instrument transfer will be required. To transfer using left hand for right-handed dentist. Using minimum of motion Firmly transfer instruments to the dentist.

What are the three basic grasps used by the operator to hold the instruments? Pen grasp, Palm grasp, Palm-thumb grasp
Pen grasp Holding the instrument like a pen.
Palm grasp Held within the palm of the hand.
Palm-thumb grasp Using the palm and thumb to hold the instrument.
Mouth Mirror and Explorer: Two handed exchanged right hand the mirror and left hand the explorer.
Cotton Pliers: Single- handed technique, pinching together the “beaks” to avoid dropping the item held by the pliers
Handpieces: Avoid tangling the hoses during the transfer.
Hinged instruments: Held at their hinges and are transferred by directing their handles into the dentist’s palm.
Describe the single – handed instrument transfer: Only using one hand to transfer an instrument.
Describe the two – handed instrument transfer: Using two hands to transfer an instrument such as the Mirror and Explorer.
What should be the distance between the operator and the patient’s face? 12 to 14 inches
What guidelines should be followed when using the operator’s stool? Seat far back Thighs parallel to the floor and knees slightly lower than the hips Feet flat on the floor Support lower back Forearms bent at the elbow and parallel to the floor
What guidelines should be followed when using the assistant’s stool? Seat back on stool Feet on the base or foot ring of the stool Close to dental chair as possible Legs parallel to the patient’s chair Eye level 4 to 6 inches above the eye level of the operator
How should the assistant be positioned in relation to the position of the operator? The assistant should be higher than the operator.
