Site Construction Vocab

TermDefinition
tripod A three-legged stand used to support equipment, such as surveying instruments, providing stability.
laser transit An optical instrument that uses a laser beam to determine ground levels, commonly used in surveying.
level rod A measuring tool used in conjunction with a leveling instrument to determine elevation differences.
laser level receiver A device that detects laser beams and provides visual or audible indications, helping to ensure accuracy in leveling tasks.
driveway fabric A type of geotextile fabric used to stabilize soil and prevent the mixing of gravel and soil in driveway construction.
culvert pipe A pipe or structure that allows water to flow under a road or pathway, often used for drainage purposes.
gravel Mix of stone materials under 2 inches in size. This can be very clean or have a little dirt which makes it stick together better.
#2 stone A specific size of crushed stone, typically used for drainage and as a base material in construction projects.
oversized stone Larger than standard-sized stones used in construction, often for decorative purposes or as a base for heavy structures.
topsoil The uppermost layer of soil, rich in nutrients, essential for plant growth and often used in landscaping.
drainage The process of removing excess water from an area, crucial for preventing flooding and soil erosion.
drainage tile A type of piping used to direct excess water away from an area, often installed underground to manage water flow.
grading The process of leveling and shaping the ground to prepare it for construction or landscaping.
squaring The act of creating a right angle or ensuring that structures are aligned correctly, often used in construction.
frost footer A type of foundation that extends below the frost line to prevent damage from freezing and thawing cycles.
footer drains A type of drainage system installed at the base of a foundation to manage water flow and prevent flooding or water damage.
slope The degree of incline or decline in a surface, which can affect water drainage and the stability of structures.
footer sleeves Holes left in the footer to allow tile lines to move from inside to outside the footer.
backfilling The process of refilling an excavation with soil or other materials after construction, which helps to stabilize the foundation.
foundation The lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level, which supports the structure and distributes its weight.
