Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray (1861-1944) “the father of Indian chemistry”1896 discovered mercurous nitrite, laid the groundwork for years of discoveries on the synthesis, structure, and decomposition of nitrites and hyponitrites of different metals.
Mario Molina (1943-2020) Argued that CFC absorb solar radiation, in a reaction that destroys the ozone layer. Led the British Antarctica survey detected a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica Awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 & Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013
Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003) In 1947, became the first Black woman to receive a PhD in chemistry in the US (Columbia University). Her graduate and focused on cancer research with purines and pyrimidines and was a precursor to the identification of the DNA structure.
