Sentence Types

All the different sentence types.

TermDefinition
Dependent Clause A clause that cannot stand alone as a complete thought because it does not express a complete thought. *THIS IS NOT A SENTENCE*
Independent Clause A clause that can stand on its own and is a complete thought. *THIS IS A SENTENCE*
Simple Sentence Consists of a single independent clause that includes a subject and a single predicate.
Compound Sentence Joins two independent clauses with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon.
Complex Sentence A single independent clause and a dependent clause. *ALWAYS CONTAINS SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS*
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines two or more independent clauses with at least one independent clause.
