metabolism the body's use of molecules for energy and growth
molecule a group of atoms joined together in a particular way
glucose a molecule that organisms can use to release energy, and that is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms
oxygen a molecule that organisms get from the air or water around them and is used to release energy
amino acids molecules that are the building blocks of proteins
carbon dioxide a molecule made of 1 carbon and 2 oxygen atoms
system a set of interacting parts forming a complex whole
circulatory system Body system that transports molecules to and from all cells of the body
digestive system Body system that takes in food and breaks it down
respiratory system Body system that takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
homeostasis the process by which an organism or cell maintains a state of balance among its internal systems to survive and function properly.
starch a type of energy storage molecule made of many glucose molecules connected together
protein a category of large molecules that perform important functions inside living things; made up of amino acids
diagnosis the identification of the nature of an illness or other problem by examination of the symptoms.
energy the ability to make things move or change
chemical reaction a process in which atoms rearrange to form new substances

blood doping the injection of oxygenated blood into an athlete before an event in an attempt to enhance athletic performance.
excretory system Body system that removes waste from the body and helps maintain homeostasis.
immune system Body system that is made up of a complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they make that helps the body fight infections and other diseases.
skeletal system Body system that is made up of the bones that give structure to the human body
nervous system Body system that sends messages back and forth between the brain and the body. The brain is what controls all the body's functions.
muscular system Body system that is made up of 3 different types of muscle to allow for movement and help move substances (food and blood) within the body
tissue a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function
organ a structure composed of a group of different tissues that work together to perform a specific function
integumentary system A body system that is made up of the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands. It protects the body, regulates temperature, senses stimuli, and produces essential substances.
