Genres

Literary Genres

TermDefinition
Mystery A suspenseful story about a puzzling event or crime that is not solved until the end of the story.
Fiction Writing genre that tells about imaginary (unreal) people and events
Nonfiction Writing genre that tells about real people and events
Poetry Writing genre that uses language to evoke a specific emotional response or imaginative experience. This writing genre is written in stanzas and may have rhyming words and rhythm.
Play or Drama Writing genre that is meant to be performed in front of an audience rather than read.
Historical Fiction Stories that take place in a certain time period in the past.
Realistic Fiction A type of fiction with stories about life as it could be lived today
Science Fiction A type of fantasy that uses science and technology (robots, time machines, etc.)
Fantasy A type of fiction that tells an imaginative story with characters or events that are not realistic including elements that are impossible such as talking animals or magical powers.
Traditional Literature Stories that are passed down from one generation to another through storytelling.
