Literary Genres
| Term | Definition |

| Mystery | A suspenseful story about a puzzling event or crime that is not solved until the end of the story. |
| Fiction | Writing genre that tells about imaginary (unreal) people and events |
| Nonfiction | Writing genre that tells about real people and events |
| Poetry | Writing genre that uses language to evoke a specific emotional response or imaginative experience. This writing genre is written in stanzas and may have rhyming words and rhythm. |
| Play or Drama | Writing genre that is meant to be performed in front of an audience rather than read. |
| Historical Fiction | Stories that take place in a certain time period in the past. |
| Realistic Fiction | A type of fiction with stories about life as it could be lived today |
| Science Fiction | A type of fantasy that uses science and technology (robots, time machines, etc.) |
| Fantasy | A type of fiction that tells an imaginative story with characters or events that are not realistic including elements that are impossible such as talking animals or magical powers. |
| Traditional Literature | Stories that are passed down from one generation to another through storytelling. |
