| immiscible - | liquids are not capable of being mixed into stable solutions |
| suspension - | an unstable mixture of undissolved particles in a liquid |
| emulsion - | a mixture of two or more immiscible substances unified with the aid of a surfactant |
| surfactants - | molecules that acts as a bridge to allow oil and water to mix, or emulsify, aka, molecules whose jobs are to suspend substances in water |
| oil-in-water emulsions - | oil droplets are emulsified in water; do not feel greasy because the oil is "hidden" |

| hydrophilic - | water loving/attracted to water |
| lipophilic - | Having an affinity for or an attraction to fat and oils (oil-loving). |
| lather stabilizers - | maintain foaming condition during product use to increase mixing of surfactant with oil and water |
| humectants - | Ingredients that attract water. Humectants draw moisture to the skin & hair which increases "bounce" and "fullness" |
