| variable | a symbol used to represent a quantity that can change |
| constant | a value that does not change |
| like terms | two or more terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power; two or more constants |
| coefficient | a value being multiplied by a variable; found in front of a variable |
| exponential expression | a mathematical phrase that indicates that the base is to be used as a factor the number of times shown by the exponent. |

| numerical expression | a mathematical phrase involving numbers and operation symbols but no variables |
| order of operations | the hierarchy of mathematical operations used to evaluate a numerical expression |
| sum | the answer to an addition problem |

| quotient | the answer to a division problem |
| evaluate | to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression |
| simplify | to write a numerical or exponential expression as a single value; to write an algebraic expression in fewer terms |
