Devshirme A practice in the Ottoman Empire where Christian boys were taken from their families, converted to Islam, and trained to serve in the military or as government officials
Janissary An elite military unit in the Ottoman Empire made up of boys who were taken through the devshirme system. They were known for their loyalty and discipline.
Absolutism A political system where a single ruler has complete control over the government and is not limited by laws or other governing bodies.
Counter/Catholic Reformation A movement in the 16th century by the Catholic Church to reform itself in response to the Protestant Reformation, which aimed to correct abuses and reaffirm Catholic beliefs.
Jesuits Members of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order founded in the 16th century. They focused on education, missionary work, and spreading Catholicism.
Indulgences Certificates sold by the Catholic Church that promised to reduce punishment for sins, which many criticized as a way for the Church to make money.
Simony The act of buying or selling church offices or positions, which was considered corrupt and unethical.
Thirty Years War A conflict in Europe from 1618 to 1648 that involved many countries and was mainly fought over religious differences between Catholics and Protestants.
John Calvin A Protestant reformer in the 16th century who developed the idea of predestination and had a significant influence on the development of Reformed Christianity.
Sikhism A monotheistic religion that originated in the 15th century in India, founded by Guru Nanak. It emphasizes equality, community service, and devotion to one God.
English Bill of Rights A 1689 document that limited the powers of the monarchy in England and established certain rights for Parliament and individuals, shaping modern democracy.
