| Term | Definition |

| ion | Charged particle (+ or -), lost or gained an electron. |
| ionic bond | Transfer of electrons, between metals and nonmetals. |
| covalent bond | Sharing of electrons, between nonmetals. |
| octet rule | The rule that atoms are most "stable" when they have eight electrons in their outer shell, making them "Happy". |
| cation | A positively charged ion (formed when an atom loses electrons). |
| anion | A negatively charged ion (formed when an atom gains electrons). |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | States that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction, so the mass of the reactants must equal the mass of the products. |
| reactant | Substances that start a chemical reaction; found on the left side of the chemical equation. |
| product | Substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction; found on the right side of the chemical equation. |
| subscript | The small number written to the right of a chemical symbol in a formula, indicating the number of atoms of that element. |
| coefficient | A number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation to indicate the number of molecules. |
