| static character | character who stays the same |
| dynamic character | complex character who changes throughout the story |
| round character | well developed character |
| flat character | a character who has only 1-2 known traits |
| point of view | the lens from which the story is told |
| first person point of view | told by the main character (I, me, my) |
| second person point of view | told by a narrator addressing the read as "you" |
| third person limited point of view | told by a single character with a minimal understanding (he, she, it) |
| third person omniscient point of view | told by a narrator who is all knowing |
| theme | central idea or the life lesson an author want the reader to learn |
| examples of theme | Believe in yourself; Stand up for others; It's okay to be different |
| plot | sequence of events in a story |
| exposition | story set up/ introduction; characters and setting are introduced |
| rising action | the events in the story that begin to complicate |
| climax | the turning point/most exciting part of the plot |
| falling action | events begin to settle |
| resolution | the end/final solution or outcome of a story |
| conflict | (or struggle) is the central problem in the story, it can be internal or external |
| character vs. self | internal conflict; the character struggles mentally or with themselves only |
| character vs. character | external conflict; character struggle with one another |
| character vs. nature | external conflict; character struggles with animals, weather or another natural element |
| character vs. society | external conflict; character struggles with ideas, customs and/or laws of a community |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
| time | (part of setting); time of day, year or historical period when a story takes place |
| place | (part of setting); geographical location of a story |
| mood | (part of setting); feeling or atmosphere the setting creates |
