Unit 15

Vocabulary for Chemistry

TermDefinition
Kinetics The study of the factors that determine how rapidly reaction occur
Collision theory the rate of the reaction is proportional to the number of collisions that occur each second between the reactants
Effective Collision A collision in which the colliding particles aproach eachother at the proper angle and with the proper amount of energy
Catalyst A substance, usually used in small quantities compared to the reactants, that modifies or increases the rate of a reaction without being consumed in the process
inhibitor A substance that stops a chemical reaction
Enzyme Any of numerous proteins produced by living organisms and serving as biochmemical catalysts
Activation Energy the minimun kinetic energy that must be possessed by the reactants in order to give effective collision
Potential energy diagram a plot of the change of potentian energy that occurs during chemical reactions
Transition state The momment during a reaction when the species involved has aquired the minimun amount of potential energy required for a successful reaction. Point of highest potential energy
Reaction rate How quickly the reactants disappear and the products form
Reversable reaction A reaction in which the equilibrium constant is such that the reaction proceeds at a detectable rate in either directions under appropriate conditions. Results in equilibrium mixture of reactants and products.
Le Chatelier's Principle when a system that is in dynamic equilibrium is disturbed, the system undergoes a change that counteracts the disturbance and, if possible, restores the equilibrium.
stress An applied force or system of forces that tends to shift a reaction
Endothermic Characterized by or causing the absorption of heat
Exothermic Releasing heat

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
