|---|---|
| energy | the ability to do work or to cause changes in matter |
| work | the transfer of energy to an object by a force that causes the object to move in the direction of that force |
| kinetic energy | the energy of an object that is due to the object's motion |
| potential energy | the energy that an object has because of the position, condition, or chemical composition of the object |
| system | a group of interacting parts that move or work together |
| field | any region in which a noncontact force has an effect |
| energy transfer | The passing of energy from one object to another |
| energy transformation | The process of one form of energy changing to another form |
| heat | the energy that is transferred between two objects that are at different temperatures |
| temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in an object or substance |
| thermal energy | the measurement of the total amount of kinetic energy of all the particles in an object or substance |
| law of conservation of energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed |
| conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching |
| convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas |
| radiation | The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves |
