Vocab terms for the Periodic Table unit.

QuestionAnswer
Group (Family) - A vertical column on the periodic table
Period - A horizontal row on the periodic table
Periodic Law - When the elements are arranged in order by increasing atomic number, there is a repeated pattern of their physical and chemical properties.
Noble Gas - A nonreactive element that is in group 18 on the periodic table
Halogen - An element in group 17 on the periodic table
Alkali Metals - An element of Group 1
Alkaline Earth Metals - An element of Group 2
Transition Metals - Elements in columns 3-12 on the periodic table
Metals - Make up the majority of the periodic table and lose electrons in chemical reactions to become positive ions.
Nonmetals - Elements that gain or share electrons in a chemical reaction
Metalloids - An element that has both metallic and nonmetallic properties
Atomic Radius - Half the distance between the nuclei of 2 atoms of the same element when the atoms are joined
Electronegativity - A measure of the attraction that an atom has to gain electrons
Ionization Energy - The amount of energy needed to remove a valence electron
Shielding - The number of energy levels between the nucleus and the valence electrons
Allotropes - Two or more different forms of the same element in the same phase
Malleability - Ability to be hammered into sheets
Ductility - Ability to be drawn into wire
Luster - Has a metallic shine
