| base | The base is used as a factor as many times as given by the exponent. |
| cube root | One of three equal factors of a number. |
| exponent | The exponent tells how many times the base is used as a factor. |
| irrational number | A number that cannot be expressed as a/b where a and b are integers and b does not equal 0. |
| monomial | An expression that is a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and/or variables. |
| negative exponent | Negative exponents are the result of repeated division. |
| perfect cube | A number that is the cube of an integer. |
| perfect square | A rational number whose square root is a whole number. |
| power | A number that is expressed using an exponent. |
| radical sign | The symbol used to indicate a non-negative square root. |
| real number | The set of rational numbers together with the set of irrational numbers. |
| scientific notation | A number in scientific notation is expressed as a x 10 to the nth power, where a is less than ten and greater than or equal to one. |
| square root | One of the two equal factors of a number. |
| standard form | A number is in standard form when it does not contain exponents. |
