Cell Cycle- H

Honors Cell Cycle Vocab

TermDefinition
DNA contains the instructions for, and controls, the production of proteins (traits)
Helicase an enzyme that "unzips" DNA by breaking the hydrogen bonds between the nitrogen bases
Base pairing Rule that states A pairs with T and C pairs with G
Template strand a single DNA strand that serves as a guide for making the matching or complementary DNA strand
Deoxyribose Pentose (5-carbon) sugar that (with phosphate) makes up the backbones of DNA
DNA replication Process of copying DNA to create identical strands, occurs in Interphase (S phase)
Complementary strand New strand of DNA created during replication that matches the original, template strand of DNA
Nucleotide Monomer (building block) of DNA that consists of a phosphate, deoxyribose sugar, and a nitrogen base
Double helix the shape of DNA, like a twisted ladder or spiral staircase
DNA polymerase an enzyme that joins individual nucleotides to exposed nitrogen bases.
Nitrogen bases The sequence stores genetic information (A,T,C,G)
S phase part of interphase when DNA is copied or synthesized
Cell Cycle Series of events that cells undergo to make repairs or allow an organism to grow
G1 phase first stage of interphase in which cell grows and performs its normal functions
G2 phase Stage of interphase in which cell doubles its organelles and proofreads and fixes the DNA if mistakes are found
M phase Includes mitosis (nuclear division) and cytokinesis (cell division)
G0 phase A nondividing/ resting phase in which a cell has left the cell cycle.
Interphase Cell grows, performs its normal functions, replicates DNA and prepares for nuclear division; consists of G1, S, and G2 phases
Cancer Abnormal and uncontrolled cell division when cells skip G0
Cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm to form two separate identical daughter cells
Mitosis Nuclear division, includes PMAT
Hydrogen Bond Found between nitrogenous bases
Enzymes Catalyst that speed up cell processes like DNA replication including Helicase (breaks hydrogen bonds) and DNA Polymerase (joins bases pairs together)
G1 Checkpoint Check for nutrients and cell size to see if cell is ready to divide
G2 Checkpoint The cell proofread the DNA (checks for errors), and makes repairs if needed
M Checkpoint Checks for chromosome alignment at center of cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
