Science: Waves

A stack to help you learn and study about sound waves

TermDefinition
Reflection when a wave bounces off a surface (looking in a mirror)
Refraction Energy waves bending as they travel through different mediums (like a pencil in a cup of water)
transparent allowing the property of light to pass through a material
absorption the transfer of energy from a wave to matter as the wave passes through it
longitudinal wave a back and forth motion that carries energy (like a slinky or a spring)
Transverse wave wave particles move up and down to transfer energy (like a rope)
mechanical wave waves that move through matter: requires a medium
frequency the number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given unit of time
wavelength measured from a point on one wave to the same point on the next wave.
medium a substance that makes the transfer of energy possible from one location to another through waves Ex: air
