Poetic Devices

These are the language techniques that poets use to communicate meaning!

TermDefinition
Simile Uses 'like' or 'as' to compare two things.
Personification Giving human qualities to non-human things.
Metaphor Directly comparing two things, often using 'is' or 'are'.
Imagery Uses vivid language connected to the senses (touch, taste, sight, sound, smell).
Alliteration Different words that start with the same sound. For example, wriggling worm OR people power OR chasing change.
Onomatopoeia A word that describes its own sound. For example: crash, bang, pow, snap, click, thump.
Hyperbole Extreme exaggeration.
Rhyme Different words that sound similar. For example: round and hound, fear and clear, house and mouse.
Repetition Repeating whole words or phrases.
