Poetic Devices
These are the language techniques that poets use to communicate meaning!
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Simile | Uses 'like' or 'as' to compare two things. |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to non-human things. |
| Metaphor | Directly comparing two things, often using 'is' or 'are'. |
| Imagery | Uses vivid language connected to the senses (touch, taste, sight, sound, smell). |
| Alliteration | Different words that start with the same sound. For example, wriggling worm OR people power OR chasing change. |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that describes its own sound. For example: crash, bang, pow, snap, click, thump. |
| Hyperbole | Extreme exaggeration. |
| Rhyme | Different words that sound similar. For example: round and hound, fear and clear, house and mouse. |
| Repetition | Repeating whole words or phrases. |
