Nouns Rules

| noun | a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea |
| common noun | names any person, place, thing, or idea and is not capitalized unless at the beginning of a sentence EX: woman, teacher, city, country, team, book, holiday |
| proper noun | names a particular person, place, thing, or idea and is always capitalized EX: Aunt Josie, Ms. Brown, Los Angeles, Germany, Asia, Sutter Cougars, Chinese New Year |
| compound noun | a single noun made up of two or more words used together |
| one word compound noun | a compound noun that uses two words together as one EX. daydream, Iceland |
| hyphenated word compound noun | a compound noun that uses two or more words joined together by a "-" EX: self-esteem, sister-in-law |
| two word compound noun | a compound noun that uses two or more words with a space in between EX: family room, Clara Barton |
| people nouns | nouns that refer to people EX: parents, Scott, teacher, sister, linebackers, baby sitter, Theresa Vargas |
| place nouns | nouns that refer to places EX: White House, states, Nairobi, school |
| thing nouns | nouns that refer to things (inanimate objects or animals) EX. rocket, desks, ocean, hamster, computer, Newbery Medal, Golden Gate Bridge |
| ideas | nouns that refer to ideas (things that cannot touch or hold in your hand) EX: danger, freedom, kindness, fears, dream |
| names | these are always proper nouns that are capitalized anywhere in a sentence because they are specific people, places, things, or ideas |
