TermDefinition
colloquial/colloquialism informal way of speech or writing. Not acceptable for formal writing.
Coherence The quality of being consistent.
Connotation An idea or feeling that adds to the word's literal or primary meaning, a word having a second behind meaning.
Denotation The literal meaning of a word. NO second background meaning.
Diction The choice of words being used in talking and writing.
Ethos The ethical and credibility of what makes the audience believe what to be false or true.
Euphemism The use of a word that is vague, less offensive than another word.
Hyperbole Uses exaggeration or a overstatement.
Hypophora A way to ask more then one question and get one or more answer(s) from it.
Imagery The use of words to create a visual image of something in your head.
Academic diction The use of scholarly words
Ad Populum Fallacy Popular appeal, appeal to the majority
Allegory Represent an abstraction to the literal meaning.
Alliteration The repetition of sounds.
Allusion A direct or Indirect reference to something which is commonly known.
Ambiguity The multiple meaning of a word.
Analogy A similarity or difference between two different things.
Anaphora One word being used more then once in a sentence.
Anecdote The term most frequently used to an incident in the life of a person.
Apostrophe A figure of speech that directly addresses a personified abstraction such as liberty or love.
