| Colloquial/Colloquialism | The use of slang or informalities in speech or writing. (not acceptable in formal writing) |
| Coherence | Has to be clear and intelligible. (Words, phrases, and clauses in sentences, etc.) |
| Connotation | The implied meaning of a word. (May include emotions, ideas, etc.) |
| Denotation | The dictionary meaning of a word. |
| Diction | Refers to writer's word choice. |
| Ethos | The use of the audiences' beliefs and or values. |
| Euphemism | The use of a word or phrase that is less direct, less offensive than another. |
| Hyperbole | A figure of speech using exaggeration or overstatement. |
| Hypophora | Figure of reasoning where one or more questions are asked and then answered often at length. |
| Imagery | Description which impress the images of images of things upon the mind using one or more of the five senses. |

| Anecdote | A short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting episode or event. |
| Apostrophe | A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction. |
