TermDefinition
Colloquial/Colloquialism The use of slang or informalities in speech or writing. (not acceptable in formal writing)
Coherence Has to be clear and intelligible. (Words, phrases, and clauses in sentences, etc.)
Connotation The implied meaning of a word. (May include emotions, ideas, etc.)
Denotation The dictionary meaning of a word.
Diction Refers to writer's word choice.
Ethos The use of the audiences' beliefs and or values.
Euphemism The use of a word or phrase that is less direct, less offensive than another.
Hyperbole A figure of speech using exaggeration or overstatement.
Hypophora Figure of reasoning where one or more questions are asked and then answered often at length.
Imagery Description which impress the images of images of things upon the mind using one or more of the five senses.

Academic Diction Use of scholarly words or terms.
Ad Populum Fallacy Popular appeal, or appeal to the majority
Allegory Using character and/or story elements symbolically to represent an abstraction in addition to the literal meaning.
Alliteration The repetition of sounds.
Allusion A direct or indirect reference to something that is commonly known.
Ambiguity The multiple meanings of a word, either intentional or unintentional.
Analogy A similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them.
Anaphora A kind of repetition in which the same expression is repeated at the beginning.
Anecdote A short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting episode or event.
Apostrophe A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction.
