Why is microbiology important to the dental assistant? To understand different diseases, infections, and viruses to limit spreading them by implementing infection control.
Why is it important for dental assistants to understand Koch’s Postulates? He created petri dishes to in case microorganisms to better understand bacteria and diseases.
Why is it important that Joseph Lister recognized that airborne microorganisms were responsible for postsurgical infections? It was important because he was able to minimize the risk of infection after surgery.
Why is it important that Louis Pasteur discovered the rabies vaccine? It was the first vaccine leading to more, and people were able to minimize the exposure of getting viruses ect.
What are the three primary shapes of bacteria? coccus (sphere), Bacillus (rod), and spirochete (spiral)
What is the staining process for separating bacteria? grams
. What is the term for bacteria that require oxygen to grow? Aerobes
What is the most resistant form of bacterial life? Spores
Which types of hepatitis are spread by exposure to blood? HBV HCV HDV
How is HIV spread? spread through sharing or accidentally pricking your finger with a needed someone with HIV used. It also can be sexually transmitted.
What tissues are affected by the West Nile virus? The nervous system is affected causing inflammation in the brain, and spinal cord
How is the H1N1 virus spread? spread through touch, sneeze on something, and a person would touch the same infected area and touch their face. It is spread from person to person and can be on surfaces that others touch.
How is the Ebola virus spread? spread through direct contact from a contaminated person with it, and is transmitted through blood, and bodily fluids.
How is the COVID-19 virus spread? It is spread from person to person from sneezing, coughing, and breathing from the droplets of an infected person.
What virus caused the most recent global pandemic? coronavirus
What birth defect can be caused by the Zika virus? birth defect with the baby's brain. (microcephaly)
What microorganism causes oral candidiasis? A yeast infection
. What microorganism is used as the benchmark for the effectiveness of a surface disinfectant? Staphylococcus aureus
What disease is also known as lockjaw? Tetanus
. What is a sign of the first stage of syphilis? cold sore, and a chance.
What is a pandemic? global outbreak of disease.
